Javier Bardem, the Spanish actor known for his outspoken support of Palestinian rights, has opened up about the severe backlash he faced for his stance. During a conversation at the Pilar Bardem Cultural Association alongside his siblings Carlos and Mónica, Bardem recounted a shocking instance of media pressure.

“They actually bought full central pages of The New York Times with my face and my wife’s face, with the headline ‘anti-Semitic’,” he explained, describing the extreme lengths taken to silence him. He recalled a poignant moment while filming in South Africa. “I was in the gym, and on the TV, CNN opened with a photo of me that said ‘anti-Semitic.’ My blood ran cold, and I thought, ‘What have I done?'”

Reflecting on the incident that occurred 12 years ago, Bardem said, “Back then, they controlled the narrative. If you were against Israel, you were anti-Jewish. They had so much power, especially in the media. It was extraordinary.” He admitted that the campaign made him question himself. “It gets to the point where you start doubting: ‘What if they’re right?’ That’s been their weapon for a long time. But that has changed. Now we know it’s not true.”

Concluding his thoughts, Bardem called it “a way to silence, to create self-censorship, born from fear of retaliation.” He noted that today, especially the younger generation, is speaking out. “People are saying, ‘No, this is wrong. This is genocide, and it cannot be allowed in the 21st century.'”

Bardem also defended free speech and professional integrity. “You should be able to work and express your views without conflict. If that’s not possible, as is the case in the United States, then we have a problem. That’s not a democracy. It’s a media dictatorship,” he added.
